Regatta

There hasn’t been a rowing regatta in Nijmegen since the organization of the last Emperor
Charlesregatta. Because the rowing water of Phocas is a busy shipping lane, it wasn’t suitable
anymore. All of this changes with the “Ruimte voor de Waal” project, the opening of the
Spiegelwaal and the impending relocation of Phocas to this brand-new location. This is why,
on October 28 th 2017, the first edition of the Traianus Regatta will be rowed. The regatta
consists of two races and is raced in the style of headraces. Starting in 2018, the regatta will
be part of the Dutch national Recreational competition for the C4+ boat type.
The Spiegelwaal is about as wide as the Bosbaan and walking there from the city centre takes
about ten minutes. This is not the only selling point of this regatta. The real selling points are
the distances of the regatta. All crews will first row a headrace from west to east. To make
things more exciting, crews will be started in pairs.
Later during the day, crews will be rowing a single kilometre with a turning point at the
halfway mark. This turn isn’t the usual sharp one around a buoy, but a rather larger bend if
you will around the bridge pillars of one of the bridges. In other words, we’ll be testing the
skills of the coxswains as well as the skills of the rowers.
Of the course, we’ll be offering some food and drinks. Because the regatta’s location, you
could also give Nijmegen itself a visit or go for a walk in the surrounding area. We kindly
invite anyone who’s interested to join us on October 28 th to experience the Traianus Regatta.
